O’s blow first game of season
The Baltimore Orioles wasted a perfect opportunity to pull out a tremendous Opening Day victory.
New closer Mike Gonzalez could not protect a one-run lead in the ninth inning as the O’s fell to the Tampa Bay Rays, 4-3.
Adam Jones led the way with three hits, including a home run and a double. Matt Wieters and Luke Scott also hit home runs.
Starting pitcher Kevin Millwood gutted his way through five innings, allowing just two runs on nine hits.
The rest of the bullpen pitched well to bridge the gap from Millwood to Gonzalez, but the closer came up short.
