NEWS
Baltimore Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts is still at least a couple of weeks away from returning to the team.
The second baseman still has not yet been cleared by doctors to begin resuming baseball activities.
Until that happens, Roberts is essentially stuck on the bench with no end in sight, which is not good news for the team’s struggling offense.
The Orioles want to take the most cautious approach with Roberts so that this isn’t a recurring problem the rest of the season.
Once Roberts can begin baseball activities, he will then have to play several games in the minor leagues as part of a rehab assignment.

Baltimore Orioles outfielder Felix Pie is out at least three months after tearing a muscle in his back.
Manager Dave Trembley was disappointed by the news but commended Pie for his pain tolerance.
The injury occurred on Opening Day, yet Pie continued to play until he was finally sat down.
With Pie out, Lou Montanez, Nolan Reimold and Luke Scott will take turns playing in left field.
Montanez will likely be the team’s fifth outfielder for the remainder of the year barring injuries.

Baltimore Orioles owner Peter Angelos has turned down former star Cal Ripken’s hopes of landing a position in the front office.
Ripken went to general manager Andy MacPhail and inquired about getting back into baseball with a position in the team’s front office.
MacPhail agreed that Ripken would be an asset, lending his baseball knowledge while getting the opportunity to learn the nuances of a front office position.
MacPhail went to Angelos with the proposal, but the owner rejected it on the grounds that he didn’t want Ripken to receive credit when the team returned to prominence.
You would think the last thing on Angelos’ mind is concern over who gets credit when the team is good again considering their dismal start to the season.

Baltimore Orioles general manager Andy MacPhail has the back of his manager, Dave Trembley.
Questions about Trembley’s job security are already coming up after the team’s dismal start to the season.
MacPhail has quickly brushed away any such concerns, saying it’s entirely too early to talk about any type of change.
He said that he intends on working with Trembley to correct personnel issues to improve the play on the field.
The GM also said that he does not operate that way and will not overreact to a couple of bad weeks of baseball.

The Baltimore Orioles have made finding a different way to lose each night a work of art.
This time, the Orioles managed to blow a 3-0 lead en route to an 8-6 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays in 10 innings.
Starting pitcher Brian Matusz was phenomenal, getting into the eighth inning before his bullpen failed him.
Matusz left the game with the bases loaded, and the Orioles bullpen proceeded to give up five runs.
Luke Scott pinch-hit in the bottom of the eighth inning and launched a game-tying home run, but Matt Albers surrended a three-run missle in the top of the 10th.

Just when it looked like Baltimore Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts was finally healthy, he was hit by the injury bug once again.
Roberts, who missed nearly all of spring training with a back injury, strained his oblique sliding into second base and is likely heading for the disabled list.
The second baseman was removed from the game at the conclusion of the inning with newly acquired veteran Julio Lugo taking his place.
The injury will really hurt the Orioles offense because the team does not have another viable option as their leadoff hitter.
Felix Pie could see time out of the leadoff spot, but he doesn’t hit for nearly as high of an average as Roberts or foul off the same number of pitches.

The Baltimore Orioles wasted a perfect opportunity to pull out a tremendous Opening Day victory.
New closer Mike Gonzalez could not protect a one-run lead in the ninth inning as the O’s fell to the Tampa Bay Rays, 4-3.
Adam Jones led the way with three hits, including a home run and a double. Matt Wieters and Luke Scott also hit home runs.
Starting pitcher Kevin Millwood gutted his way through five innings, allowing just two runs on nine hits.
The rest of the bullpen pitched well to bridge the gap from Millwood to Gonzalez, but the closer came up short.

The Baltimore Orioles have acquired utility infielder Julio Lugo from the St. Louis Cardinals for a player to be named later.
The Orioles have concerns about their middle infield, especially given Brian Roberts’ back problems.
Robert Andino was expected to be the teams utility infielder, but he likely just lost his roster spot.
Lugo split time between the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals last year, hitting .280 between the two clubs.
He should see some time at shortstop as the Orioles want to try and keep Cesar Izturis as fresh as possible.

Baltimore Orioles manager Dave Trembley has finally announced his starting rotation for the 2010 season.
Kevin Millwood will have the honor of taking the mound on Opening Day against the Tampa Bay Rays.
He will be followed in the rotation by veteran Jeremy Guthrie and Rookie-of-the-Year candidate Brian Matusz.
Brad Bergesen will be the No. 4 starter, and David Hernandez beat out Chris Tillman for the final spot.
General manager Andy MacPhail has made it clear that the rotation is bound to change throughout the season and pitchers will get opportunities if they are throwing well.
