Wigginton suspension reduced to two games

Baltimore Orioles infielder Ty Wigginton’s appeal of his suspension has reduced it to two games.

Wigginton will begin serving the suspension immediately and finish it before the July 31 trade deadline.

Serving the suspension after the deadline certainly would have made a few teams think twice about trading for him.

The pudgy infielder was suspended for bumping an umpire while arguing that he tagged a runner retreating to first base. (Read More…)

Ripken could join O’s

Cal Ripken Jr. is in talks with the Baltimore Orioles to rejoin the organization as a special adviser.

Ripken would do what he could over the next two years to help the club while his son finishes out high school.

Once his son goes off to college, Ripken would be ready to move into a full-time position with the club. (Read More…)

O’s place Wieters on disabled list

Just when it looked like the Baltimore Orioles were starting to get healthier, another player is down for the count.

Catcher Matt Wieters has been placed on the 15-day disabled list as he fights a stubborn hamstring strain.

Wieters initially hurt the hamstring rounding the bases but thought he would be fine if given a day or two off. (Read More…)

O’s, Arrieta sweep away Rangers

The Baltimore Orioles have done the unthinkable, sweeping a four-game road series away from the surging Texas Rangers.

The sweep was completed in fine fashion, with Jake Arrieta showing unusually solid command and pitching the team to arguably its finest stretch of the season.

The series success certainly takes the club into the All-Star break on a very high note and gives hope for a respectable second half of the season.

Arrieta went six innings, allowing just one run and, maybe more importantly, only two walks. (Read More…)

Baltimore Orioles midseason review

The Baltimore Orioles came in 2010 with high hopes, but a disastrous start quickly dashed any hopes of a strong season.

The team got off to an unthinkable 2-16 start, which lead to speculation that manager Dave Trembley could be fired.

Trembley has managed to remain the manager, but the team’s play hasn’t improved much at all. (Read More…)

Markakis calls out team

Baltimore Orioles outfielder Nick Markakis is known as being a quiet, professional player who does his talking on the field.

Fed up with all of the losing, Markakis broke his silence and lashed out to the media about his frustrations.

Among the biggest complaint, the outfielder feels that too many players are going up to the plate without any plan of attack. (Read More…)

O’s begin managerial search

The Baltimore Orioles have begun their search for a new manager, but a decision is not expected anytime soon.

General manager Andy MacPhail has already interviewed Bobby Valentine and Eric Wedge and is set to meet with other candidates.

The Orioles expect the process to take a month or more, but there is no specific timetable in place. (Read More…)

O’s snap 10-game losing streak

The Baltimore Orioles snapped a 10-game losing streak with a 4-3 win in extra innings over the Boston Red Sox.

It also served as the first victory in the very short managerial career of Juan Samuel, who has been given the interim tag.

Nick Markakis plated the game-winning run by driving in shortstop Cesar Izturis, touching off the celebration.

The team tried to give Samuel a shaving-cream pie to the face, but he was able to avoid it just in time.

Samuel was teary-eyed over the win and said he planned to keep both the game ball and lineup card.

O’s fire Trembley

The Baltimore Orioles have fired manager Dave Trembley after an awful road trip that ended with a three-game sweep at the hands of the New York Yankees.

Trembley’s job has been on the line since the start of the season when the Orioles began 2-16.

The team turned it around for a brief period of time, playing almost .500 ball, but has fallen back to its old ways.

While Trembley was criticized for many of his moves, Joe Torre or Earl Weaver couldn’t fix this team.

The Orioles will give Juan Samuel the interim manager title and look for a permanent replacement in the offseason.

O’s swept away by Blue Jays

The Baltimore Orioles let more decent starting pitching go to waste as they were swept away in the three-game weekend series against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Kevin Millwood, Chris Tillman and Jeremy Guthrie all put together solid performances that were wasted by the bullpen and more bad offense.

As good as Baltimore starting pitching was, Toronto’s was much, much better.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Toronto’s starters got the chance to face the O’s lackluster lineup.

Despite the ugly series, manager Dave Trembley managed to keep his job through Monday’s off day.
